Basic requirements & duties

The urology residency program has been readapted and modified, highlighting not only the resident's responsibilities but also clarifying what he should be achieving over the entire extended program. According to the department, resident urologists are expected to:

  • Be familiar with the basic setup of the OR, be able to scrub correctly and know the essentials of sterile procedures.
  • Develop a personal program of self-study and professional growth with guidance from the faculty and other teaching staff.
  • Participate in safe, effective and compassionate patient care under supervision, commensurate with their level of advancement and responsibility.
  • Participate fully in the educational activities of their program and, as required, assume responsibility for teaching and supervising other residents and HO.
  • Participate in departmental programs and activities involving the medical staff.
  • Adhere to established practices, procedures, and policies of the Department of Urology, Kasr Al-Ainy, Cairo University.
  • Apply cost containment measures in the provision of patient care in light of limited hospital resources.

Daily departmental activities are typically divided into two days in the out-patient clinic (OPC), two days in the operating room (OR), and two days in the clinical wards during which staff rounds are held. Residents are expected to be punctual, on time in attending the OR, OPC, and clinical ward duties all of which start at 8 a.m.

All residents are required to attend ward and surgical activities daily with one day of leave per week at the discretion of their direct supervisor. This does not preclude the resident performing his own rounds for patient care on a twice daily basis.

Formal dress code is expected with a tie worn on staff rounds and while presenting talks.

All residents will be required to enter patient data into the department filing system and to perform basic statistical analyses. Adequate follow-up of patients is mandatory.

Morbidity and mortality reporting (in the form of a 1 hour presentation) will be held for each unit once a month at a predetermined and regular interval. Case presentations are also expected during the meetings.

The department holds regular scientific activities every Wednesday, in addition to the postgraduate lectures. Residents are required to attend a minimum of all scientific activities and lectures held in the department.

Residents are expected to apply for the Masters degree in Urology, and to successfully complete at least the first part and thesis during their residency

Residents will be evaluated in the form of a rotational checklist filled out by the staff during each rotation and biannual in-service exams covering an array of topics and focusing on highlighted topics during each rotation

Appointment is directly linked to performance and evaluation
